The traditional northern mule ewe, a cross between a Swaledale ewe and a Blue Faced Leicester tup, is an excellent mother.  Renowned for producing progeny of good meaty sires like the Texel, it is a hardy breed to boot, which is why it is used extensively in northern England where the climate is harsher.
